| Abstract | This study investigated demotivating factors in English speaking among Thai Grade 10 EFL learners using a quantitative approach. A 35-item six-point Likert-scale questionnaire was administered via Google Forms to 323 students who were recruited through convenience sampling at a public upper secondary school in Bangkok. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics. The overall mean indicated a moderately high level of demotivation (M = 3.77, SD = 0.43). Learning content and materials was the most demotivating factor, (M = 4.78), followed by teachers’ competence and teaching styles (M = 4.29), inadequate school facilities (M = 4.27), test scores (M =3.40) and lack of intrinsic motivation, which was rated as the least demotivating factor (M = 2.10). The findings suggest that demotivation originates from external, school-based factors rather than internal factors, which offer practical implications for teachers and curriculum designers. |
