Abstract The Thailand 4.0 initiative aims to transform the country into a digital economy, and education reform is a crucial component of this transformation. Social mobile learning has the potential to play a key role in supporting education reform and the Thailand 4.0 initiative. However, previous studies have shown that while some groups have engaged effectively with social mobile learning, others have not. In this paper, we will examine the relationship between education reform, the Thailand 4.0 initiative, and the potential of social mobile learning. We will also explore the challenges of communication for sustainability, the importance of reflection in understanding complexity, the role of design thinking in teaching sustainability, and examples of teaching for sustainable development in the context of Thailand 4.0 and social mobile learning. The findings of this study suggest that social mobile learning has the potential to support education reform and the Thailand 4.0 initiative, but that engagement with social mobile learning can vary among different groups. Incorporating teaching for sustainable development into the education system in Thailand 4.0 can help to promote a culture of sustainability.
