Abstract In this work 2 phase fermentation approach was firstly introduced in itaconic acid production. Medium optimization indicated that during growth phase organic nitrogen provided the highest cell biomass production while in the production phase, slight amount of organic nitrogen helped drive the pyruvate flux towards TCA; thus, it could be bypassed to itaconic acid production. Morphology also played key role in itaconic acid production. From the results obtained in this study, pellet structure was a preferred structure that promoted itaconic acid production in A. terreus.
