Abstract | The relationship between ancient China and Southeast Asian states has been the crucial interesting topic among the students of Asian international relations. This paper aims to study the relationship between Siam and China from the aspect of Thai scholar, to find the answer that under the tributary relation, whether Siam was subordinated to Chinese empire and accept the status of being Chinese vessel state or not. The study found the differences of language and culture between two nations causes the difference in interpreting the meaning of "Jin Gong" (tributary). Siam sent the tribute to Chinese empire for the trading purpose, which confirmed by the ending of this custom when Siam saw no more benefit from trading with China, not for the purpose of politics and security as the Chinese understood. |
