| Abstract | The aim of this research was to study the efficacy and residues of abamectin and emamectin benzoate when applied as trunk injection to control coconut black-headed caterpillar, Opisina arenosella Walker in Nam-Hom coconut. The experiments were conductedin Nam-Hom coconut orchards at Ban-Phaeo district, Samut Sakorn province and Muangdistrict, Lopburi province from July 2017 to September 2019. The heights of the two groups oftested coconut tree were between 4 to 6 m and 6 to 10 m at both locations. Abamectin 1.8%EC at the rates of 15, 30, 60 and 90 ml per coconut tree and emamectin benzoate 1.92%EC at the rates of 5, 15 and 50 ml per coconut tree were injected into the coconut tree's trunks.Efficacy of abamectin and emamectin benzoate was determined by collecting leaves of thetreated trees at 3, 7, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days after injection and fed to the 2nd instars ofOpisina arenosella Walker. and counted their mortality after 72 h Results showed that theapplication of abamectin 1.8% EC at 15 ml/coconut tree and emamectin benzoate 1.92%EC at 5 ml /coconut tree were effective in controlling coconut black-headed caterpillar atmore than 85% and 90% respectively for at least 90 days after injection. No residues ofboth insecticides were detected in all tested samples of coconut meat, juice and shell.Phytotoxicity of both insecticides was not detected in the treated coconut trees. This findingindicated that the 2 insecticides can be used to effectively control coconut black-headedcaterpillar in 4-10 m high Nam-Hom coconut. |
