| Abstract | Continual education (CE) is essential to ensure the ongoing growth of pharmacists' knowledge, professionalism, procedural skills, and practice-based improvement, assuring quality patient care. From March 27, 2015, CE was a mandatory requirement for pharmacists working in Thailand. There is paucity of data exploring pharmacists' self-development. The objectives of this study were to assess the professional development of Thai pharmacists and their knowledge about the last CE criteria for relicensing (B.E. 2558). The data were collected from 990 quota sampling pharmacists by a mailed self-administered anonymous questionnaire from Jan 18, 2016 to March 18, 2016. The response rate was 33.5%. Analysis of the data showed that the majority (80.5%) of respondents had experienced academic self-development. The main activities in which pharmacists participated were attending academic seminars (90.3%) and self-study from articles in journals (52.3%). Attending academic seminars, however, were more expensive than the other activities. Most of the pharmacists in the sample group knew the purpose of CE but half of them ignored the criteria of CE credits. The data relating to their self-development experience showed that pharmacists could comply with the mandatory CE requirements of the Pharmacy Council of Thailand, however the quantity, the delivery of the CE program and the cost of participation in some activities were identified as major barriers to accessing CE activities. The Pharmacy Council of Thailand should encourage the CE unit to increase CE programs, to develop a variety of CE activities related to pharmacists' duties and to install an efficient CE recording system. |
