| Abstract | This paper gives a brief exploration of the history of ideas on economic inequality and examines key recent development of the ideas. In explaining the history of the ideas, the paper observes that economic inequality only became widely accepted as an aspect of social justice during the Enlightenment period. Such a change was contributed by the expansion of humanist ideas. From the Enlightenment period, economic inequality attained more attention in the academia. At the present, there have been two approaches in developing perspectives on economic inequality. The first is fostered through the works such as that of Amartya Sen. This approach focuses on expanding the scope of meaning, suggesting the incorporation of more dimensions, and recognizing human diversity in the consideration of inequality. The second is developed in the works such as that of Thomas Piketty. This latter approach tries to understand the structure behind the dynamics of economic inequality, such as explaining how the concentration of capital ownership can drive the rises in inequality. |
