| Abstract | The relationship between bank competition and economic growthis still a controversial issue. There are two opposing hypotheses: morecompetition-less-growthand more-competition-more-growth. This paper, therefore, attempts to conclude the relationship under the competition-growthnexus by using a sample of 81 countries covering both developed anddeveloping countries during the years 2000 to 2013. The empirical results revealthat two main measures for bank competition, specifically market pricingpower and market concentration, indeed have opposite effects on economicgrowth. In addition, given the same level of competition, the economic growthtends to be higher in countries with lower level of accessibility to bankfunding, lower credit to the private sector and a more efficient banking system. These findings have significant policy implications to analyse the effect ofcompetition in the financial sector on economic growth. |
