| Abstract | Studies in language education have paid attention to the effect ofindividual and cultural features of language learners' learning strategy use.The present study aims to compare the language learning strategy choice ofstudents from two different cultures: Thai and Japanese university studentsstudying English as a foreign language in their native countries. To have aninsightful picture and understanding, the use of a multi-data collectionmethod was employed to gather both quantitative and qualitative datathrough the questionnaire of Oxford (1990) and semi-structured interviewsdesigned by the researchers. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL) Version 7.0 for EFL/ESL (50 items) was designed for non-native Englishspeaking students who use English as a second or foreign language. Itcomprised 50 questions divided into six parts: memory, cognitive, compensation, meta-cognitive, affective, and social strategies. Studentsanswered each item statement using a five-point Likert-scale ranged from 1(never or almost never use) through 5 (always or almost always use).Interview question items were written based on the purpose of the study andrelated to the questionnaire items, textbooks, and journals. The interviewquestion form consisted of two main sections: background information andopen-ended questions regarding language learning strategy use together withinformation of factors affecting individual language learning. To investigate thedifferences in language learning strategy choice and learners' individualfactors, learning strategy use as reported by 20 Thai and 4 Japanese universitystudents was compared. The quantitative results will be reported and furtherdiscussed using support from qualitative data. The implications for learningand teaching are insightfully discussed in this paper. |
