| Abstract | This study is a literature review on the findingsof different studies on the dimensionality of languageproficiency. It aims to particularly analyze theassumptions and the statistical findings of relevantresearch since it has always been an endless debateamong linguists and language teachers about whetherlanguage proficiency is organized as a unitary abilityor multiple divisible competences. For this objective,it is necessary to begin this study by defining thenotions of language proficiency. By clarifying thetheoretical meanings of language proficiency, Iinvestigated how different researchers discuss therelationships between different language sub-skillsand the overall language proficiency. Since there wasa major shift of interest from discrete-point testing tothe testing of integrated skills in 1970s, this has ledto debates and discussion about the nature oflanguage proficiency in communication. Even thoughthere are some degrees of consensus on researchevidence for different language sub-skills, the results are still inconclusive or even contradictory. In trying tosummarize the findings of many studies, I believe thatit is imperative to assess the implications of the findingsof these studies in the benefits of language teachingand testing. |
