| Abstract | The purposes of the present research work are toinvestigate which aspects of depth of vocabularyknowledge have strong and significant correlation withacademic reading comprehension and examine to whatextent different dimensions of depth of vocabularyknowledge have predicted to academic reading success inan EFL context. A total sample of 175 students at tertiarylevel was considered for the present study. The results ofthe study evince that a significant and strong correlationwas found between the newly adapted analytic(meronymy) relations aspect of depth of vocabularyknowledge and academic reading success, and analyticrelations was found to be the most unique predictor toexplaining the academic reading success of the students.The results suggest that those students who hadknowledge about the analytic (part-whole) relations ofdepth of vocabulary knowledge performed better inacademic reading comprehension than knowledge ofother dimensions of vocabulary depth, represented bymorphological knowledge and both paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations. The addition of analytical relationsjointly with paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations andmorphological knowledge, which represented depth ofvocabulary knowledge for conducting the presentresearch, has added to the body of knowledge. |
