Abstract This study used a post-test-only control groupexperimental design to determine the effects of prelectureonline quizzes on the students' perceivedpreparation and academic performance. The participantsincluded 54 pre-service Turkish teachers of Englishenrolled at a state university in Turkey. The participantswere randomly selected from a list and were assigned totwo sections: control and experimental groups. Thestudents in the control group were not required to takethe online quizzes, while the ones in the experimentalgroup were asked to complete the pre-lecture onlinequizzes. The results showed that the participants in theexperimental group scored higher on the finalexamination at the end of the semester than those inthe experimental group and that a significant positivecorrelation existed between the scores on the quizzesand the scores on the final examination. Moreover, theparticipants in the experimental group reported thatthey prepared for the classroom discussions havinglearnt the key terms and concepts since the onlinequizzes urged them to do the required readings.
