| Abstract | PhD supervision is crucial for higher degreeresearch students in western academic contexts. Despitean increasing body of literature regarding the internationalstudent-supervisor relationship, Thai students in Australianhigher education are under-represented. This qualitativestudy aims to explore discursive practices that impact onThai students' experiences taking place during the courseof their PhD supervision in an Australian university.Drawing upon interview transcripts, it was found that Thaistudents' working relationship and communication withtheir supervisors, as well as their exertion of agency wereinterconnected and addressed as key practicesunderpinned by the relationship between these two parties. The complexity of PhD supervision requires an opendialogic and culturally appropriate pedagogical engagementto lessen implicit tensions between international studentsand supervisors. Supervisors need to consider students'prior learning experiences and cultural baggage throughculturally sensitive supervision. Non-native-Englishspeaking(NNES) international PhD students' academic andsociocultural orientations regarding the implications of the supervisor-supervisee relationship, academic Englishproficiency development, intercultural communications, western academic norms and expectations, and copingstrategies with supervisors' feedback should be adequatelypromoted. The study highlights the importance of theinternational student-supervisor relationship for theirPhD achievement and satisfaction in Australian highereducation. |
