Abstract Conflicts and violence either inside or outside theclassroom can affect the quality of learning within theclassroom. Critical literacy is proposed as a strategicinstructional practice which aims at teaching anation's citizens to be literate and raising their criticaland social consciousness (Freire, 2007). This papersuggests how teachers, as intellectual labor (Smyth,2011), can implement a critical literacy framework tobuild a culture of peace in a reading class wherestudents hold different ?taken-for-granted' ideologies ofbeing ?us' and ?them'. It also proposes how NetGeneration students in our EFL classrooms can makea significant contribution to the transformation ofconflicts and violence stemming from divisions,hierarchy of differences and inequalities of the societyinto peace.
