| Abstract | Learner-centeredness is a consistent theme in thefield of education. Yet, the perspectives of young learnersare still barely considered. Lightbown and Spada (2013)have pointed out that even though young children havenot developed cognitive maturity and the metalinguisticawareness of adolescents or adults, they learn alanguage without any stress or anxiety. They have thefreedom to speak, be silent, pause, and make mistakeswhen producing the language. It is extremely important, therefore, for teachers to consider presenting relaxinglearning contexts and environments for young languagelearners. This paper reports the positive affectiveoutcomes that have been found in a play-basedlanguage learning (PLL) classroom and young EFLlearners' opinions of play-based English languagelearning. The participants were third graders that tookpart in PLL activities for 15 weeks. Qualitative data weregathered from observations to shed light on theparticipants' positive affective outcomes and interviewsin order to investigate their opinions toward PLLactivities. These young language learners' voices and reflections on the PLL activities provide a uniqueperspective on the usefulness of play activities integratedinto young learners' classroom language learning. |
