| Abstract | This study was inspired by Qian (1999) andSt?hr (2009) and researched 88 Chinese learnerswho had already passed the College English Test 4(CET). These learners volunteered to participate inthe study regarding the depth and breadth ofvocabulary knowledge and its relationship withlistening comprehension, which was assessed byanalyzing the results of a series of comprehensivetests including the vocabulary size test (VST), depthof vocabulary knowledge (DVK), and listeningcomprehension test (LCT). The findings suggestedthat a vocabulary level of 5,000 word families had ahigher correlation with academic listeningcomprehension (r=0.86), while a vocabulary level of3,000 word families had a lower correlation with alower listening comprehension (r=0.41). This isevidence that outstanding listening scores require alarger vocabulary size than does reading. Thisstudy also showed that the depth of vocabularyknowledge provided a higher correlation (r=0.91) with listening comprehension and a higher predictivepower in listening comprehension than the breadthof vocabulary knowledge. A multiple regressionanalysis was used, and the R2 change was 2.6%when adding DVK to VST, which demonstrated thatthe depth of vocabulary knowledge had a significantpredictive power on the scores of listeningcomprehension. This showed that attention shouldbe paid to this area, with teachers as well as learners,in China as well as in other EFL contexts in futureteaching and learning of listening comprehension. |
