Abstract This study was an attempt to investigate how proficientand non-proficient learners used listening strategies tocomplete a listening task. 65 third-year ChulalongkornUniversity Commerce and Accountancy students participatedin the first stage of the quantitative data collection. 18students were randomly selected from the group for more indepthdata. The instruments included the strategyquestionnaire adapted from Oxford's (1990) and listeningtasks. Descriptive statistics, the independent t-test and thethink-aloud technique were used to analyze the data. Thefindings showed a significant difference between the twogroups' report of their use of the strategies in certain areas.Also, they revealed the proficient students' appropriate use ofthe strategies.
