| Abstract | This article reports the findings of an investigation intothe perceptions of EFL learners regarding video input used ina listening test and the strategies they employed during thecomprehension process. Content videos composed of TVcommercial messages (TVCMs) and public serviceannouncements (PSAs) were used as the listening texts andquestion preview, along with repeated input, were embeddedin the test design. Forty-three EFL learners took the test andexpressed their opinions about it via questionnaire. Twentystudents were then purposively selected for retrospectiveinterviews. Their perceptions of the video input and theirstrategy use while comprehending the video were examined. Results showed students' positive comments on the videotexts and suggested that the test tasks providedopportunities for students to apply metacognitive strategies, such as advance organization, directed attention, selectiveattention, comprehension monitoring, and double-checkmonitoring, to enhance their comprehension. The studyillustrates the potential of using TVCMs, PSAs, and test tasksthat can facilitate the use of metacognitive strategies in avideo listening test for low-intermediate or intermediate EFLlearners. The implications of the findings regarding listening assessment and pedagogy in the EFL classroom context arediscussed. |
