| Abstract | Affective factors can play an important role inlearning and may change over time. This paperinvestigates emotional states of first-year engineeringstudents towards self-study experience through wordsassociated with affect used in their reflections in eportfoliosover a semester. The study employed a corpusbasedanalysis by focusing on keywords of affect with thestatistical criteria and analyzing the context thosekeywords occurred in. To uncover the students' recurrentfeelings, the concordance lines for each keyword werefurther analyzed qualitatively to identify each of them intoa category of pre-determined affective factors. Then, relative frequencies of each instance of each category werequantitatively counted for comparison. The findings showthat affective factors in questions namely motivation,self-efficacy, and anxiety, either positive or negative, changed with regards to frequency and direction in thedifferent phases of learning. In sum, this study not onlysets a practical model for analyzing extensive dataquantitatively, but also can provide more insightful results combined with awareness-raising for teachers regardingthe fluctuation of affective factors over a period of time. |
