| Abstract | This study aims to investigate the effects of dietary Jerusalem artichoke (JA) powder supplementation on laying performance, hematology and jejunal morphology of 20-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens raised in an organic system under a completely randomized design (CRD). Hens were randomly assigned to five groups with three replicates (ten hens each). T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 received organic diets supplemented with JA powder at 0.00 (control), 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25%, respectively, for 45 days. The results revealed that dietary supplementation with JA powder did not affect feed intake and egg weight (P>0.05), but resulted in higher hen-day egg production, egg mass, egg specific gravity, albumen height, and Haugh unit in the JA-supplemented groups than in the control group, while the feed conversion ratio was lower (P<0.01). When comparing the JA-supplemented groups, the results showed that the T2, T3, and T4 groups had significantly higher laying performance and a lower feed conversion ratio than those in the T5 group (P<0.01). Evaluation of hematology and intestinal morphology revealed that dietary supplementation with JA powder did not affect packed cell volume, red blood cell count and white blood cell count (P>0.05). However, hens fed diets supplemented with JA powder had a significantly higher percentage of lymphocytes than that of the control group, while the heterophil percentage and H:L ratio were significantly lower (P<0.05). In addition, hens fed diets supplemented with JA powder had a significantly higher villus height, villus width, villus surface area, crypt depth and VH:CD ratio in the jejunum than the control group (P<0.01). The results indicate that dietary supplementation with JA powder improves laying performance, egg quality and jejunal morphology of laying hens raised in an organic system. Supplementation is recommended at 0.75% of the diet. |
