| Abstract | The white-backed planthopper (Sogatella furcifera (Horváth)), once considered as a local pest in northern Thailand, but now it has been found co-occurring with the brown planthopper in several regions of Thailand. Chemical insecticides remain an important option for controlling rice pests. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of insecticides registered for use in rice fields under Thailand’s hazardous substances regulations for controlling white-backed planthoppers during outbreak conditions. Field trials were conducted in farmers’ rice fields in Chiang Rai Province during the 2023 and 2024 dry seasons using the ‘San Pa Tong 1’ rice variety, and during the 2023 wet season using the ‘RD6’ variety. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. When white-backed planthopper population reached or exceeded the economic threshold level, nine insecticides were applied twice at the label-recommended rates using motorized mist blowers. These insecticides (Fenobucarb 50% EC, Ethiprole 10% SC, Etofenprox 20% EC, Dinotefuran 20% SG, Dinotefuran 20% + Etofenprox 15% WP, Sulfoxaflor 50% WG, Pymetrozine 50% WG, Buprofezin 5% + Isoprocrab 20% WP, and Flonicamid 50% WG) were applied twice at label-recommended rates using motorized mist blowers, and compared with an unsprayed insecticides (control). After the final application in all three seasons, the newer insecticides—Sulfoxaflor 50% WG, Pymetrozine 50% WG, and Flonicamid 50% WG— provided high levels of control, reducing white-backed planthopper populations by more than 80%. Meanwhile, the older insecticides such as Dinotefuran 20% + Etofenprox 15% WP, Dinotefuran 20% SG, Buprofezin 5% + Isoprocrab 20% WP, Etofenprox 20% EC, Fenobucarb 50% EC, and Ethiprole 10% SC showed moderate efficacy, with control levels ranging from 60% to 80%. These results provide practical recommendations for managing white-backed planthopper outbreaks, taking into account both the effectiveness and cost of insecticides, and they provide guidance for reducing the risk of resistance development. |
