| Abstract | Sixty patients, aged 15-55 yr, were randomized to receive sevoflurane in nitrous oxide and oxygen, propofol or thiopental infusion. The induction time and hemodynamic responses during induction and intubation were recorded to compare with other groups. A vital capacity technique was used for gaseous induction group via a semiclosed system. Induction of anesthesia ( time to eye closed and time to loss of eyelash reflex ) with sevoflurane was significantly slower compared with propofol [ 54.10(15.10) vs 25.15(5.76 )s, 57.00(18.10) vs 33.00(7.77) s] and thiopental [54.10(15.10) vs 23.45(5.10) s, 57.00(18.10) vs 30.00(6.56 ) s]. Arterial blood pressure decreased significantly in propofol group during induction. During intubation arterial blood pressure and heart rate increased in all groups. There was more excitation in gaseour induction group, though this did not interfere with induction. We conclude that with this technigue, induction was rapid with sevoflurae (induction time less than 60 sec), although slower than propofol and thiopental induction. |
