| Abstract | The objective of this paper is to investigate the potential of agro-tourism in Northeastern (Isan) Thailand to promote the sustainable use and preservation of natural resources, with a particular focus on empowering local communities to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism practices. The study examines how local communities can be strengthened in terms of capacity to promote the sustainability of tourism activities and their involvement in the development of agro-tourism. The study also aims to assess the effectiveness of agro-tourism as a strategy for fostering sustainable growth and providing alternative sources of income for local populations. To achieve these objectives, the critical literature review method is used to identify the key success factors and limitations of the community-based approach of agro-tourism. The research gaps identified in this study were a lack of research on the specific needs and preferences of tourists interested in agro-tourism, and the need for further research on the impact of agro-tourism on local communities and the environment. Based on the results of the study, a collaborative and inclusive approach involving all stakeholders, including local communities, agro-tourism operators, and government agencies, is recommended to address the challenges in promoting sustainable practices and preserving natural resources. This approach should consider factors such as power relations, cultural preservation, and local participation. A new model that incorporates the principles of sustainable tourism and community-based tourism, emphasizing the participation of local communities in decision-making processes and benefits distribution, can be adopted to achieve the objectives of the study. |
