Abstract This article discusses digital humanities in Japan on the meaning of digital humanities and an overview of digital humanities in Japan by describing its history in the mid-20th century and the early 21st century. Digital humanities research includes research on text mining and natural language processing of classical Japanese text, the use of digital maps and GIS for historical and cultural analysis, the creation of digital archives and databases for preserving and accessing Japanese cultural heritage, and digital art and preservation of digital materials. Organizations supporting the digital humanities include national and international organizations, universities, and research institutes. It also presents the organization of academic conferences and workshops supporting digital humanities in Japan.
