| Abstract | Introduction: Depression is an important public health concern due to its devastating morbidity and mortality among elderly. Objectives: The study aims to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with depression among elderly in San Ton Kok village, Chiang Rai, Thailand. Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted at San Ton Kok village, Chiang Rai, during the period September to November in 2018. A total sample of 72 elderly with age 60 years or above was randomly selected. The PHQ-9 was used to assess a depressive symptoms and a socio-demographic questionnaire was used to identify factors associated with depression. Logistic regression at ?=0.05 were used to determine the association between variables. Results: Overall, there were 72 subjects of whom 62.5% were female, and 61.1% were aged 60-69 years. The prevalence of depression among elderly in San Ton Kok village was 16.6%. The multivariable logistic regression model revealed that marital status (AOR = 5.33; 95%CI = 1.20-23.61) were associated with depression among elderly. Conclusion: The prevalence of depression among elderly was found to be not high. Elderly without partner needs to be given to screening and treating depression. |
