Abstract This study examined the effect of countdown signals on driver behavior at intersections based on data collected at five intersections. From the vehicle speed statistics, it was found that drivers tend to speed up to pass an intersection when the remaining time on the countdown timer is running out. It was not such a case when the countdown signal was not in use. As a result, the red-light violation rates for both with and without the countdown signal are not different.
