| Abstract | This study evaluated the effect of pharmaceutical care for bipolar patients who had just received lamotrigine for the first time. The outcomes were the occurrence of drug-related problems and rash. Methods: The study was a prospective randomized controlled trial of bipolar outpatients in Srithanya Hospita and the patients were treated with lamotrigine for the first time between 5th April and November 30th, 2018. Participants were allocated into a controlled group (the standard service) and a studied group (pharmaceutical care). Drug-related problems were evaluated before and after taking lamotrigine for 8 ๏ฟฝ 12 weeks. Results: There were 117 patients who attended the study and the average age ? SD was 32.0 ? 9.7 years. The pharmaceutical care decreased ๏ฟฝunnecessary drug therapy๏ฟฝ (p < 0.001), identified more ๏ฟฝadverse drug reactions๏ฟฝ (p = 0.039) and increased the average of percentage of medication administration (p = 0.041). Meanwhile, the standard service decreased ๏ฟฝunnecessary drug therapy๏ฟฝ (p = 0.016). In this study, the rash was found in 11.97% of the patients with the average onset ? SD of 18.8 ? 17.5 days. Conclusion: The pharmaceutical care decreased ๏ฟฝunnecessary drug therapy๏ฟฝ, identified more ๏ฟฝadverse drug reactions๏ฟฝ and increased the average percentage of medication administration. Pharmacists should closely monitor patients who have recently initiated lamotrigine treatment for the development of a drug rash. |
