| Abstract | Introduction: Rang Jeud (Thumbergia laurifolia Lindl), butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea L), and grape ( Vitis vinifera L ) are becoming a popular herbs for food supplement and cosmetic ingredients. Phenolic compounds are major components found in these herb extracts which possess an effective antioxidant activity and may help to delay cell-aging due to free radical species. However, It is lack of the comparision data among these herbs. The aim of this study was to compare the biological activity of crude extracts among leave of Rang Jeud, , butterfly pea flowers grapes peel. METHODS: Chemical analysis of the extracts were determined for total phenolic compounds by Folin-Ciocalteu assay and total anthrocyanin by pH-differential method. Bioactivities of the extracts were examined for antioxidant activity with free radical scavenging (DPPH), lipid peroxidation Inhibition, ferric reducing power, tyrosinase inhibition activity and antimicrobial acytivity against Staphylococcus aureus DMST 2658, Staphylococcus epidermidis DMST 12853, Bacillus subtilis DMST 15896 and Pityrosporum ovale ATCC 64061. Results: The phenolic compounds found in the extracts were as followings, butterfly-pea flowers > Rang Jeud > grapes peel and anthrocyanin found in butterfly-pea flowers > grapes peel > Rang Jeud. When the extracts were tested for free radical scavenging activit, it was found that , grapes peel > butterfly-pea flowers > Rang Jeud whereas Inhibition of lipid peroxidation activity was as follows, Rang Jeud > butterfly-pea flowers > grapes skin. In addition, the reducing power of the extracts shows that butterfly-pea flowers > Rang Jeud > grapes peel. When antimicrobial activity was carried out, it was found that Rang Jeud leaf extracts was better than the others. However, all herbs extracts possessed less tyrosinase inhibition. Conclusions: In comparision among three herbs, all extracts possess good antioxidant activity and Rang Jeud extract appears to be the most potential herbs for further studies in terms of product development. |
