Abstract The main objective of this study was to optimize the electrocoagulation (EC) process usingaluminum electrodes and Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to treat car wash wastewater(CWW). The car wash wastewater was treated using a cylindrical electrode assembly (anodeand cathode) consisting of concentric aluminum (Al) cylinders with an interelectrode distanceof 1 cm. The effects of three independent process variables, namely current (0.2–0.6 A), pH(5–9), and electrolysis time (2–10 min), on the removal efficiency of turbidity, color, and oil andgrease (O&G) were investigated using 20 experimental runs as per the Face-Centered CentralComposite Design (FCCD) generated by RSM. Under the optimal conditions (applied current= 0.42 A, pH = 7.1, and electrolysis time = 10 min), the electrocoagulation process achievedturbidity, color, and oil and grease (O&G) removals of 95.1 ± 0.5%, 87.6 ± 0.8%, and 38.1 ±1.1%, respectively, with a composite desirability of 0.912. The developed quadratic modelsdemonstrated strong predictive capability (R² > 0.97) and were validated using ANOVA.It was found that electrocoagulation is a promising technique for treating car wash wastewater,and that the removal efficiencies were significantly affected by interactions among current, pH,and treatment time. The optimal conditions aligned with the natural pH of raw wastewater,eliminating the need for chemical pH adjustment and supporting the potential for a cost-effective,plug-and-play EC system for the automotive service industry.
