Abstract This study investigates two issues that are critical to increasing our understanding of family financial decision making. First, numerous studies use weak measures of spousal influenceoften consisting of just a single question and often confusing financial decision making with financial task performance. This study develops a more robust measure. Second, numerous studies have shown that, consistent with resource theory, the greater the wife's income, the greater her influence in family financial decisions. Recent studies, however, have begun to question that. This study finds that while wife's employment is a resource leading to greater influence on the selection of financial services, with respect to other family financial decisions and tasks, it impacts wives influence only in later stages of the family life cycle.
