| Abstract | Composites of NiTi and TiB2 were fabricated by using spark plasma sintering and mechanical properties were investigated. The mixtures of Ni, Ti and TiB2 powders were sintered at temperatures between 1173K and 1323K under the uniaxial pressure of 20MPa. By the x-ray diffraction measurements it was shown that NiTi of both B2 austenite and B19' martensite structures exist in the composites. By the SEM observation it was shown that NiTi filled the space between TiB2 grains and dense samples were obtained. The grain size of TiB2 was around several microns which was the same as that of the starting TiB2 powders. The Vickers hardness of the composite increased as the amount of TiB2 increased up to 70vol% and the highest Vickers hardness of 1920Hv was obtained for NiTi-70vol%TiB2. The bending strength of the monolithic NiTi specimen was 1050MPa, which decreased gradually as the amount of TiB2 increased. The bending strength of NiTi-70vol%TiB2 was as high as 830MPa. |
