Description ABSTRACTThe purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of Kinesio Taping (KT) on temporo-spatial [stride length of affected side, step length of affected side, gait speed, single support time (SST) of affected side, double support time (DST)] and kinematic variables [ankle angles at the initial contact (IC), terminal stance (TSt), and pre-swing (PSw)] during walking in individuals with stroke. A cross-sectional study design was performed in this study. Fourteen individuals with stroke who had foot drop were objectively examined for the temporospatial and kinematic variables by 3D motion analysis system. The assessments were performed at before taping, immediately after taping, and after taping with overground gait training. KT was applied with the functional correction technique for ankle dorsiflexion and eversion and with the inhibition technique at ankle plantarflexor muscle. The overground gait training was performed after taping for 30 minutes. The three walking trials were collected and averaged data were used in the statistical analyses. The results showed significant differences in the affected stride length (p < 0.001), gait speed (p = 0.002), and affected SST (p = 0.001) between before taping and immediately after taping. In addition, the results showed significant differences in the affected stride length (p = 0.017) and affected SST (p = 0.017) between before taping and after taping with overground gait training. The results found a significant difference in ankle angle at TSt (p = 0.005) between before taping and immediately after taping. The results also showed significant differences in ankle angles at IC (p = 0.001) and TSt (p = 0.009) between before taping and after taping with overground gait training. Moreover, the ankle angle at IC (p = 0.011) and ankle angle at PSw (p = 0.022) had significant differences between immediately after taping and after taping with overground gait training. In conclusion, the KT application can improve some gait variables. Hence, therapists may use KT as another method to improve gait performance for individuals with stroke.
