| Abstract | In political contexts such as UNGA, understanding speakers’ intentions and priorities is crucial as it highlights current global issues and reflects country’s direction. This corpus-based transitivity study applies Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) transitivity framework to analyze process types in ASEAN countries’ statements and uses AntConc 4.2.4 corpus tool to examine words and pronouns that represent ASEAN leaders or nations. The findings revealed that material processes were dominantly found across all ASEAN statements, followed by relational and mental processes, respectively. These findings suggest that the nature of political discourse tends to emphasize actions which reflect nations’ progress and achievements. These results confirm Halliday and Matthiessen’s statement that material, relational and mental processes are the dominant process types in English transitivity system. Additionally, the results from AntConc 4.2.4 corpus tool indicated that the most frequently denoted words in ASEAN statements were pronoun “we” and country names. These uses indicate the country as a whole by implying the sense of unity and inclusiveness. However, the country names tend to sound more formal, as they represent the national identities. Other denoting words appeared with lower frequency. This study demonstrates how transitivity analysis and corpus tool can be integrated to uncover the ideational function of language. The findings provide evidence to support the interpretations that ASEAN leaders emphasize their intentions and priorities through their linguistic choices. Furthermore, this study offers pedagogical applications, as it can be extended to other genres to better understand how language constructs meaning, reflects ideologies, and represents experiences across various contexts. |
