Abstract The 2022 English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education in China introduced new expectations for primary school English teaching, with an emphasis on student-centered learning, communicative competence, and the development of core competencies. Against this background, this study explored Chinese primary school English teachers’ perceptions of the new standards. This study used a quantitative research design, with the data collected through a questionnaire completed by 52 primary school English teachers. Most teachers showed positive perceptions of the new curriculum reform and were aware of their expanded professional roles, as well as the importance of student-centered teaching and reflective practice. At the same time, teachers reported several perceived practical difficulties and implementation challenges. These challenges were mainly related to students' limited English proficiency, communicative teaching, examination pressure, heavy workloads, and large class sizes. This reflects a gap between curriculum goals and classroom practice. The findings indicate that successful implementation of the 2022 English Curriculum Standards requires more practical professional development and stronger institutional support.
