Abstract This study investigated the reading operations necessary for the 2025 Thai A-Level English reading test and six in-house reading tests designed for a test-preparation course at a public high school in Bangkok. The objective was to identify the reading operations represented in both test sources and analyze their distributions. The research employed a quantitative descriptive and comparative content analysis methodology. The dataset comprised 40 reading items from the officially published 2025 Thailand A-Level English test and 105 reading items from six in-house reading tests. Each item was categorized according to its primary reading operation employing the reading operation model adapted from Hughes and Hughes (2018). The results revealed that both test sources prioritized careful reading over expeditious reading. Inference and literal comprehension were the predominant reading operations in both the A-Level English test and the in-house reading tests. Nonetheless, the in-house reading tests had a greater number of interpretation items while the A-Level English test comprised a higher proportion of skimming and scanning items. The results indicate that the in-house reading tests were partially consistent with the A-Level English test but did not completely cover its entire spectrum of reading operations.
