| Abstract | High human/financial losses caused by recent earthquakes (e.g. Haiti, 2010; Turkey, 2011; Nepal, 2015) highlighted the high vulnerability of existing structures, many of which were built before the introduction of modern seismic codes. Traditional retrofitting techniques to enhance the performance o these substandard building include concrete/shortest jacketing or steel jacketing/ steel plating. While these techniques can reduce the seismic vulnerability of existing structures, they can be highly invasive, labour intensive and can increased the mass of the building.Recently, retrofitting with Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRP) and Post-Tensioned Metal Straps (PTMS) has proven very effective at enhancing the performance of existing buildings. However, the factors affecting the effectiveness of such lighter and cost-effective solutions need to be known before they are used in practice. This first symposium will provide a basic understanding of the fundamental behaviour of full-scale RC buildings retrofitting with FRP and PTMS. The course is open to engineers, professionals, practitioners, researchers, decision makers, officials and university students with a basic engineering background. |
