| Abstract | IntroductionEmpty sella occurs as a result of a deficientdiaphragma sellae, with subarachnoid spaceprotruding into the cavity of sella tursica. Pituitarygland is flattened and distorted against the sellafloor and walls. The sella is usually enlarged, butthis feature is not always present. The term?primary empty sella? is used when anomaly occursin patients who never had surgery radiation onpituitary or Para pituitary tumor1. The diagnosisof empty sella is radiographically made when thesella tursica is seen to be enlarged or deformedthat is partially or completely filled with cerebrospinalfluid2.Most patients with primary empty sella areasymptomatic and incidentally detected. Thepresence of empty sella was found in 5 percentof normal subjects on autopsy studies3.Typically primary empty sella syndromeoccurs in obese, multiparous women, ranging inage from 27 to 72 years, with a mean age of49 years old. Empty sella Aas been associatedwith hypertension, pseudotumor cerebri, hypopituitarism, spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)rhinorrhoea, visual field defects, diminished visualacuity and headache4. |
