Abstract Tranexamic acid is a synthetic lysine derivative that exerts an antifibrinolytic effect by reversibly blocking the lysine binding sites on plasminogen, thus preventing fibrin degradation. It has been approved by Food and Drug Administration for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding and short-term prevention in patients with hemophilia. However, the role of tranexamic acid in obstetrics and gynecology is promising. This review aims to explore the role of tranexamic acid in obstetrics and gynecology.
