| Abstract | Jatropha curcas L. has assumed an importance as a potential biodiesel crop in several countries. Five Jatropha spp. are found in Thailand. However, there was no report on yield comparison among these Jatropha species. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the yield potential of five Jatropha species found in Thailand. A field experiment was conducted during 2011 to 2012 in a randomized complete block design to compare five Jatropha species, Jatropha curcus L., J. gossypifolia L., J. podagrica Hook., J. integerrima Jacq. and J. multifida L., in three replicates. Observations were done on inflorescences per plant, fruits per bunch, fruit size, seed size, seed dry weight and oil content. The results showed that these Jatropha species differed significantly for all traits. J. curcus gave the highest seed dry weight (583 kg/rai/year). J. gossypifolia gave highest number of fruits per bunch (6.17 fruits). J. multifida had largest fruit size and seed size. J. integerrima gave highest number of inflorescence per plant (44.3 per year). J. podagrica had highest oil content (41.95%). These findings suggested that J. curcus and J. podagricawere high yield potential species for biodiesel production. The information from our study can be used in Jatropha breeding projects |
