| Abstract | Thalassemia is the leading genetic problem in Thailand. Prevalent of thalassemia trait in Thai people differs from different regions making different proportion of spouses at risk and thalassemic disease births. With the preliminary data from thalassemia screening in 594 pregnant women and her husband which conducted at hospital, in the lower Northern region of Thailand, during November 2012 to January 2013, there were 2.27% ?-thalassemia trait, 42.09% hemoglobin E trait, 5.05% homozygous Hb E (using DEAE sephadex microcolumn chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography) and 5.98 % ?-thalassemia-1 trait (using polymerase chain reaction technique for Southeast Asian-type ?-thalassemia-1). |
