| Abstract | Crude methanol extract of Barleria strigosa leave was screened for their biological activities. Cytotoxicity of the crude methanol extract was analyzed using an MTT colorimetric assay in five different cell lines (P388, HT-29, MCF-7, HepG-2 and Vero) at concentrations ranging from 250 to 4000 ?g/ml. The results found the extract are highly toxic against to murine leukemia cell line (P388). The 50% cytotoxicity concentration (CC50) of the extract for 24 hours was 413.89 ?g/ml. For preliminary study of the genotoxic potential, P388 cell line had a chromosome number range from 59 to 61 chromosomes per metaphase. The mitotic index (MI) is used for genotoxic potential in P388. The mitotic index decreases compared with the control have 66.49 and 57.73% at 50 and 200 ?g/ml concentrations, respectively. The obtained extracts were tested for their antimicrobial activity against three bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC27853) at 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/ml using paper disc diffusion method. The results indicated that crude methanolic extract exhibited strong antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis. |
