| Abstract | Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf. or Krachai is a Thai traditional plant. This fresh rhizome is widely used for cooking and treatment of several diseases and is mentioned in health promotion and as an aphrodisiac. However, there is very little information on it's toxicity and safety. The objective of this study was to evaluate the toxicity of B. rotunda juice by using bone marrow and peripheral blood micronucleus assays. The thirty-two male Wistar rats were equally divided into four groups: A control group received distilled water 1 ml/day and the experimental groups were orally administrated with B. rotunda juice at the doses of 60, 120 and 600 mg/kg bw/day for 30 days. Rats were sacrificed and blood and bone marrow were collected. The results revealed that the bone marrow significantly increased (p<0.05) in micronucleated normochromatic erythrocytes (MNNCEs), whilst polychromatic erythrocytes (PCEs), micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (MNPCEs), normochromatic erythrocytes (NCEs) and PCEs/total erythrocytes ratio did not significantly change. In the blood test, micronuclei in PCEs were not found and there were no differences in micronucleus of reticulocytes. It could be concluded that B. rotunda juice is not toxic in erythropoiesis which was discovered by micronucleus assay technique. |
