| Abstract | The author, an Emeritus Professor of Plant Breeding, discusses a concern of genetics teaching in primary and secondary schools in Thailand. According to the National Science Curriculum Standards-the Basic Education Curriculum B.E. 2544 (2002), the students of grade 1 to 6 (age 7 to 12) are expected to learn, for example, the inheritance of characteristics. At the higher levels of grade 7 to 12 (age 13-18), they are taught about cells, nucleus, genetic material and mutation. This seems to be a heavy load for junior students, especially at the age of 7 to 12 to understand such topics. In addition, the quality of biology or genetics teachers, equipment and teaching examples are other concerns should be aware of. It is anticipated that there is an urgent need for members of the Genetics Society of Thailand to discuss teaching problems in genetics for students in grade 1 to 12 |
