| Abstract | The number of aphids in screenhouse choice test condition was carried out at the field trial of the Department of Plant Science, Faculty of Natural Resources during May to July 2006. The experiments were designed as RCB with 5 replications, 10 pots/replication. The length and density of leaf?s hairs in 5 varieties of yard long bean and cowpea (T82E- 16, SR00- 863, Suranaree 1, Khao - hinson and selected ? PSU varieties) were studied under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The correlation between length and density of hairs were found with number of aphid. The results showed that 2 different shapes of hairs were presented, a club-like and slender hair shaped, both occurring on the adaxial. The lengths of the both types of hair were the shortest in selected ? PSU varieties at 44.01 and 78.57 ๆm respectively, and average of the hair densities were also the smallest in this varieties, at 39.70 hairs/cm2. IT82E ? 16 had the longest hairs in both shapes, 46.81 and 281.86 m, respectively, and average hair densities were also found, at 87.10 hairs/cm2. The rate of increasing in aphids number during 30 ? 50 days was highlighted in selected - PSU variety, averaging 239.52 aphids/plant, where as IT82E - 16 had lower aphid number, 114.53 aphids/plant. The length and density of adaxial was correlated to negative with number of aphids. IT82E ? 16 could be used as a source of aphid resistance for yard long bean improvement. |
