Abstract Asian Vigna is a group of tropical legumes which belongs to the genus Vigna subgenus Ceratotropis. Twenty one species of all Asian origin are classified into this group. Several species are utilized/exploited as domesticated or cultivated or wild-harvested species. In Thailand, Asian Vigna namely mungbean, blackgram and rice bean has long been used as food sources since ancient time. Yet the Kingdom is a centre of diversity of Asian Vigna (11 species found in nature), especially the section Angulares (9 species presented), some of which are found only in the country. However, knowledge and understanding of the Asian Vigna among Thai scientists/agriculturalists are still limited, particularly to the genetic resources of the country. In this article, the literatures reviewed have been made as well as opinions on biosystematics; evolution; diversity of Asian Vigna; discussion on genetic diversity, usefulness and conservation of the taxon in Thailand for sustainable future uses.
