| Abstract | Effects of 4 training systems namely open centre, slender spindle, palmette and Y-trellis in high clensity planting on flowering and fruit set of Java apple (Syzygium samarangense (Blume) Merr. & Perry) cv Thabthimchan were investigated at the Department of Horticulture, Kasetsart University, Kamphaeng Saen district, Nakhon Pathom province from December 2003 to June 2006. The objective of this experiment is to compare the training systems i high density planting for improvement of Java apple production. Data of flowering. fruit set and young fruit drop wee assessed. It was found that in the first bearing year number of inflorescences, number of flowers per tree and number of flowers per inflorescence wee higher than in the second bearing year and vice versa for furit set, flower and fruit set, flower and fruit drop, fruit thining and fruit bagged drop. Java apple trees trained as open centre showed the highest flowering and fruit set in the first two bearing year and vice versa for fruit set, flower and fruit drop, fruit thining and fruit bagged drop. Java apple trees trained as open centre showed the highest flowering and fruit set in the first two bearing years and significant difference from othere training systems, whereas slender spindle. Y-trellis and palmentte were not significant difference. It was also found that number of flowers per inflorescence, percentage of fruit set and fruit drop were not different among training systems. |
