Abstract The role of legumes and their planting method as green manuring affecting upland riceyield and soil properties was studied in this experiment. RCB Randomized complete block design with 4 replications and 8 treatment are the statisitical design for this statistial design for this study. Treqatments were (1) no fertiliser, (2) 4-2-2 kg/rai of N-P2P5 -K2O, (3) Crotolaria juncea L. as green manuring before planting upland rice, (4) Marcroptillium atropurpreum as a cover crop over the year and incorporated before planting upland rice, (5 to 8) are Acacia holosericea, gliricidia sepium J.A.C.Q WALP, Cassia Siamea and Leucena leucocephala. Each legume tree was planted double hedge row (50x50 cm) in the middle of upland rice plot (4.5x6 m) as alley cropping which their biomss were decapitated at 50 cm above the ground level and laid down to be decomposed on the soil surfce as green manuring 3-4 times. The result showed that greenmanuring from Gliricidia sepium J.A.C.Q WALP increased upland rice yield significantly. All the legume in this experiment slightly increased pH, OM, P and K content of the soil studied after having been established for six year.
