Abstract Black seed soybean (Glycine max (L.) merrill) varietal improvement for high yield was initiated. A line SSR 8502-2-2 was selected and tested for yield for a number of years in the Research Centers. It produced higher yield than Chiang Mai 60 (a check cultivar). The aim of this study was to test yield and adaptability of SSR 8502-2-2 under farmers' field conditions using Chiang Mai 60, Sukhothai 2 and Damteah 6 (a local black seed soybean variety) as check varieties. The experiment was conducted with single replicate, for two years (1994-1995) in the major soybean producing areas both in dry and wet seasons. The results showed that average yield of SSR 8502-2-2 from 30 sites was 314 kg/rai which was 7% and 6% higher than chiang Mai 60 and sukhothai 2, respectively. This resulted from the line producing more number of pods per plant and more supeiror seedling vigour for stand establishment leading to maintain more number of plants harvested at maturity. In comparison with the local variety, SSR 8520-2-2 produced average yield of 310 kg/rai, from 27 sites, which was 38% higher than Damteah 6. The line adapted very well in either favourable or stress environments particularly under limited water supply conditions when compared with Chiang Mai 60. The evidence of this experiment would be useful to support official release of black seed soybean variety.
