| Abstract | Purpose: One of the most important indicators of subjective well-being (SWB) among individuals who are single is perceived social support. To date, no research has specifically focused on validating the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) among single emerging adults in Chinese social context, even though it has been widely used in different Chinese communities. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the psychometric qualities of the MSPSS among Chinese single emerging adults. Research design, data and methodology: Qualitative assessments were conducted first. A total of 714 Chinese single emerging adults (365 males, 349 females) were surveyed online in the quantitative stage. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA), Convergent validity, internal consistency, and item analysis were conducted. In addition, a test-retest reliability assessment was carried out using a subsample of 45 participants (21 males, 24 females) after two weeks. Results: The results indicated excellent model fit indices and internal consistency, the three dimensions of the MSPSS and the Chinese Flourishing Scale (CFS) demonstrated substantial correlation, the test-retest reliability showed an excellent intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for the overall scale over a two-week period. Conclusions: This study validates the CMSPSS as a reliable and culturally appropriate measure of perceived social support in Chinese single emerging adults, which can help psychologists and social workers better understand the support system of this population. |
