| Abstract | The article aims at studying the translation and publication of Nibata Jataka which is crucial to the stability of Siam. During the reign of King Rama V, ensuring the stability of the nation was a major mission His Majesty emphasized in order to prevent the country from western intrusion. In terms of literature and book culture, His Majesty not only produced a lot of literary works and promoted the publication of original literary works; he also initiated the translation and publication of Nibata Jataka (religious fables from Tipitaka) to increase the amount of good books in the society as well as to spread knowledge about the tales among Thai people. King Rama V redefined the meaning of Jataka (religious fables) making them the source of both religious and secular knowledge which is in conformity with the interest in Asian way of living of western countries at the time. Therefore, the knowledge about Jataka of Thai people was seen as the exposure to modern knowledge which is crucial to the stability of Siam. |
